This is a deliberate architectural choice, not a deferral. D&D supports both theatre-of-mind (no map, distances are narrative) and grid-based battlemaps. The DM picks one or improvises a hybrid. A spec that commits to a spatial model is wrong for half the tables. Ours takes spatial facts as inputs and proves the mechanics correct regardless of how the DM represents space.
